Character.ai's sale and people building an AI persona
Character.ai filed for Chapter 11 on 12 October 2026 to pursue a sale supervised by the court. The platform is still running. Here is what that means if you are building an AI of your own knowledge.
On 12 October 2026 Character.ai said it had begun a voluntary Chapter 11 process to pursue a sale of the company supervised by the court. The company hopes the sale produces a proposal that keeps the platform operating. If no such bid is available, the platform will be wound down.
The same update says the platform remains up, and that people can keep using it. Paid subscriptions remain active, and billing is unchanged for now. The company expects the sale process to finish by the end of November or early December 2026. This page was checked against that update on 16 October 2026, and it should be revised when the sale outcome is known.
What happens to data
The update says information continues under the Character.ai privacy policy, and that privacy and security practices are unchanged. People can delete an account or export data through the app or the Character.ai website.
What an export does not do
An export from Character.ai is not an import into AI Twin. There is no tested way to turn that file into an AI Twin. If you want an AI of your own knowledge, you add the material you approve, set the scope, and share your own link.
A different job
AI Twin is for an audience that questions knowledge you approve. It cites answers, stays inside a scope you set, and declines the rest. It is not a fictional character or an unfiltered chat.
AI Twin produces answers generated by AI. Important decisions should still be verified against the cited sources or with the expert directly.
