AI Twin vs chatbot vs digital twin: what is the difference?
Three terms that sound alike and mean very different things. A chatbot answers anything, a digital twin simulates equipment, and an AI Twin makes one professional's approved knowledge available to ask.
The words are similar, so the confusion is understandable. The purposes are not.
A chatbot
A general chatbot is trained on broad public data. It will try to answer almost anything and sounds equally assured whether it is right or not. Nobody in particular stands behind what it says.
A digital twin
In engineering and manufacturing, a digital twin is a virtual model of a physical system that updates from sensor data. It is used to monitor, test and predict how equipment behaves.
An AI Twin
An AI Twin is a public assistant built on one named professional's approved knowledge. It answers within a scope the owner sets, cites its sources and declines the rest.
- Knowledge: a chatbot uses the open internet; an AI Twin uses sources the owner approves.
- Accountability: a chatbot has none in particular; an AI Twin carries the owner's name.
- Behaviour: a chatbot attempts everything; an AI Twin cites, stays within scope and knows when not to answer.
You cannot be everywhere. Your knowledge can.
Questions and answers
- Is an AI Twin the same as a chatbot?
- No. A general chatbot draws on the open internet and attempts almost any question. An AI Twin answers only from one professional's approved sources, cites them and declines what falls outside its scope.
- Is an AI Twin a digital twin?
- No. In engineering, a digital twin is a live simulation of a physical asset such as a turbine or a building. An AI Twin mirrors expertise, not equipment, and it does not simulate or impersonate a person.
AI Twin produces answers generated by AI. Important decisions should still be verified against the cited sources or with the expert directly.
